Botox is a medication that’s injected when we’re using it for facial lines, fine lines, frown lines, crow’s feet and appearance of wrinkles.

A provider injects that medication into the part of the specific muscles where we want it to do its job. At Blossom Medical, we spend a lot of time in a consultation actually watching patients talk, watching their muscles of facial expressions move and then doing what’s called facial mapping. Your provider is looking at the place specifically in those muscles that they want to treat with Botox in order to get them the best results of your Botox treatment.

And that result, especially when we’re doing Botox for the upper face, is usually that nice just open expression that has a little bit of a lifted brow. That Botox lifted brow gives that nice, refreshed and awake look.

And so we are critically looking at where we are placing that Botox, the amount of Botox and where we want Botox to do its job. Then, treating in accordance with that mapping and that plan so that Botox needs to go in a specific location for best results of your treatment.

How Long After Botox Can You Get A Massage?

It takes anywhere from one to three hours after your Botox treatment for that Botox to be taken up from where we’ve injected it by that nerve cell and where it does its job.

So it just in the nerve cell terminal, it decreases a signal from the nerve to the muscle to contract.

And when that muscle isn’t contracting as hard, you get that nice relaxation and the best possible results that you want from your Botox.

The last thing that we want to do is move that Botox around from the place where we injected it into unintended areas and different areas. So if you’ve had your Botox injections done, it is not the time to leave that appointment and go to another appointment where someone is going to give a facial massage.

Whether it’s a full body massage, do not go after getting your Botox.

Also, one of the things that you do when you have a massage is you sit on the massage table. You’ve got that loop usually going around your face and that loop is going to be touching on your forehead exactly in the location where we just put your Botox.

You’re going to have pressure in the injected areas and treated area potentially.

Absolutely do not do this.

Botox And Massage

Do not have a massage scheduled or planned for the day of treatment. This can give unwanted effects of Botox.

A good idea is going the day after your Botox treatment. We always advise patients by nighttime you can sleep in any position you want for Botox aftercare for the first night.

Don’t worry about it. Sleep on your side, sleep on your stomach, do whatever you want to exercise the next day.

These are the aftercare instructions that I give to my patients when they go home to give best results of your effective treatment.

A massage is really kind of specific because we know we’re going to have that facial pillow and that pressure on the face while we’re having our massage, and we’re also going to be potentially having our face massaged as part of the procedure. I would definitely follow these rules, wait at least one full day before having your massage done.

Let your massage therapist who’s giving you your massage be aware of the fact that you had Botox done the day before.

How Many Days After Botox Can You Get A Massage?

Some massage therapy places will have rules that they follow or protocols in place where they will want to actually perform your massage after you’ve had Botox.  That may be specific from location to location.

From your Botox treatment and having a massage scheduled, we would recommend you wait at least 24 hours for optimal results to prevent Botox moving into unwanted areas from a massage.

Then, inform your provider who is giving you your massage. Let them know that you had Botox done the day prior and they can follow their own spa or salons just protocols in order to give you the best service that day.

After Botox, avoid hot showers, strenuous activity, sun exposure, excessive sweating, hot tubs, strenuous exercise the day of your Botox appointment on that first day. You can resume normal activities the next day for best practices.
